Gus refers to Augustus Waters who is a character from The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.

“I’m in love with you and I’m not in the business of denying myself the simple pleasure of saying true things.” —Augustus Waters
I would like to try to explain to you how delightfully perfect Hazel Grace and Augustus Waters’ love story is, but I believe that the experience of reading the book is greater than the explanation that I can give.
Love is keeping the promise anyway by Pamela Sophia | RelishThyArt
‘The tales of our exploits will survive as long as the human voice itself,’ he said.
‘And even after that, when the robots recall the human absurdities of sacrifice and compassion, they will remember us.’
‘They will robot-laugh at our courageous folly,’ he said. ‘But something in their iron robot hearts will yearn to have lived and died as we did: on the hero’s errand.’

-John Green from An Evening of Awesome
When i heard John Green say those words, i remembered the scene in TFIOS where Gus rescued the civilians by diving towards the grenade. Maybe it’s just me but I believe that in that moment, Gus knew.

If anyone knows how to write a love letter, Hazel does.
I’m re-reading TFIOS in anticipation for Tuesday, and I’m not sure if my extreme amount of feelings is due to Augustus Waters or the fact that I will be seeing John Green in the flesh. Either way, I’m very excited, even though I will get back to Philly in exhaustion.
